Speaking Wedding Vows in French
One afternoon I received a phone call from an Australian gentleman who was about to marry a French woman in just a few weeks. He wanted to surprise his bride by delivering his wedding vows in French. At that stage he could not speak French, so we worked together every day, practising each sentence carefully and focusing on pronunciation, rhythm and expression.
After the wedding he told me that his bride was completely surprised and deeply moved. She had tears in her eyes when she heard him speak to her in her own language. He later continued learning French with me. This remains one of the moments that reminds me why learning a language can be about much more than grammar and vocabulary.
